He's the Mexican artist best known for La Calavera Catrina, the skeleton figure tied to Día de Muertos. The metal sugar-skull cap is based on a design by a craftsman from Oaxaca. The neck collar is engraved with Aztec art and made from zamac (a zinc alloy) in Argentina. The tequila itself comes from Jalisco.

The story starts as a family bottle. Satryna says founder Nitzan's grandparents convinced their friend, "the legendary Tequilera Newton," to make a tequila just for them. Sixty years and three generations later, Nitzan decided it deserved to be shared. The name belongs to the family's daughter: Satryna says the tequila is "named after the spirited daughter of the family."

This is a blanco, meaning unaged tequila that goes into the bottle without time in oak. Satryna says the agave is steam cooked for 24 hours. The collar reads "Triple Distilled," though Tequila Matchmaker's listing says two distillations. Satryna also says its maestro tequilero (the head tequila maker) numbers and signs each bottle by hand.

Taste it neat and a little chilled first. At 80 proof it also makes a very good margarita.

Tasting Notes

Satryna doesn't post Blanco notes on its site.
