Five & 20

Lake Erie whiskey from the Mazza family winery

Five & 20 started as a winery's distillery. The Mazza family has made wine on Lake Erie since 1972, and its stills began on European-style fruit brandy. When they moved to whiskey they kept brandy's tight, selective cuts to chase one flavor at a time: rye spice, corn sweetness. Their rye comes from neighboring fields in western New York, which was traditionally rye country.

Joe Nelson, director of distilling and brewing, leads the whiskey side in Westfield, New York. We carry the base Straight Bourbon and Straight Rye, plus the longer-aged Deep Water pair. Both Deep Water bottles are 99 proof and seven years minimum, and the bourbon is 95% corn. They went to Explorer members of our Bourbon-of-the-Month Club and Whiskey-of-the-Month Club in August. Most of the bourbon's barrels were closer to eight years. "We'd rather put out an over-aged whiskey than an under-aged one," Nelson told us.
