Smoked whiskey is a category most American distillers won't touch. Smoking the grain before mashing fights against the cleaner profile bourbon and rye are known for — and almost nobody bothers to do it with rye specifically. This one did.
Rye Fire is a six-year smoked rye from one of the silent distilleries Fallen Barrel House sources. The barrels left behind kept aging on their own — untouched, untampered with — until they were ready to bottle.
These barrels came from Barrel Mill, a Minnesota cooperage that makes some of the most respected small-format casks in American whiskey. The size — 10 gallons, against the 53-gallon industry standard — is the lever. More wood contact relative to volume. Faster, deeper extraction. Six years in a 10-gallon Barrel Mill cask delivers a level of oak and char influence that takes well over a decade to develop in a full-size barrel.
That's the structure carrying the smoke.
Nose: cracked pepper, clove, fresh herbs, campfire smoke
Palate: rye spice and dark caramel layered with charred wood and a quiet smoky richness
Finish: long and warming — lingering smoke, spice, and a dry, savory edge
Where most smoked whiskey leans sweet or one-note (peat-meets-bourbon), Rye Fire stays savory the whole way down. The herbal and peppery notes from the rye grain don't get buried under the smoke — they meet it.

Fallen Barrel House sources exclusively from American distilleries that no longer produce. The doors are closed. The stills are cold. The barrels left behind continue to mature — untouched, untampered with — until the day they're bottled. When these are gone, the distillery that made them will not be making more. Neither will Fallen. This whiskey will never exist again.
What is smoked rye whiskey?Rye whiskey made from a mash bill where the grain was exposed to smoke before fermentation — similar in concept to peated Scotch, but applied to rye instead of malted barley. Smoking adds savory, woodsmoke character on top of rye's natural pepper and spice. It's a rare style in American whiskey.
What does the 10-gallon barrel size do?Smaller barrels have more wood surface area relative to the whiskey inside, which accelerates oak extraction and char interaction. Six years in a 10-gallon barrel delivers oak influence comparable to a much older whiskey aged in a standard 53-gallon barrel.
Who is Barrel Mill?Barrel Mill is a respected American cooperage based in Minnesota, known for small-format barrels favored by craft distillers and independent bottlers looking for accelerated, deeper wood character.
Who is Fallen Barrel House?Fallen Barrel House is an independent bottler based in Los Angeles, sourcing exclusively from American distilleries that have ceased production. Launched May 2026. Every release is finite — once a cask is bottled, no more will follow.
Is 125 proof cask strength?Yes. The whiskey was bottled at the proof it came off the barrel — undiluted, the way the cask delivered it.
