Loca means crazy in Spanish. Loka means world in Sanskrit. The label spells out both like dictionary entries, and the brand's tagline does the rest: "Imagined in India, authentically produced in Mexico." Loca Loka is the creation of Indian star Rana Daggubati and musician Anirudh Ravichander. The front label commits to the idea, with a tiger and a bear playing mariachi instruments around a gold agave.
The tequila comes from NOM 1588, Tequilas El Mexicano in Arandas, Jalisco. A NOM is the four-digit number every tequila distillery is registered under, so it tells you who actually made what's in the bottle. Loca Loka says it uses only highland agave from Los Altos, harvested at six years or older. Tequila people sort Jalisco agave into two camps: highland (Los Altos) and valley (the lowlands around the town of Tequila). The brand describes its highland blend as "sweet and spicy, fruity and volcanic."
Loca Loka says the agave hearts slow-cook in brick ovens for several days. A brick oven, or horno, steam-roasts the agave slowly; the faster route is an autoclave, which is basically an industrial pressure cooker. After that it's double distilled in pot stills.
Reposado means "rested." By law it spends at least two months in oak and less than a year. Loca Loka doesn't publish the exact time for this one, only that it rests in French and American oak barrels.
Loca Loka's own medal art for this Reposado shows Gold with 95 points at the 2025 New York International Spirits Competition and Silver at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Tastings.com scored it 93 points in October 2025.
At 80 proof, sip it neat first. Then try it in a margarita where you'd normally reach for a blanco.
